Installation detail from Cyclops, 1996
Cyclops is a mechanical tableau, originally viewed through a window on West Broadway at Spring Street in New York. The photograph below shows most of the installation. A two-minute sequence starts with a closed window and a dial moving upward to six. A blue call light comes on, the dial drops toward one, a light leak below the elevator passes downward. A shutter within the window slides abruptly right and an eye appears moving slowly, then fixing on the wrapped gift in the foreground. The blue light goes off, the shutter closes, and the sequence repeats itself.
